FAQ
APA vs. Chicago differences?+
APA capitalizes words with 4+ letters; Chicago capitalizes all major words. Both keep short prepositions, conjunctions, and articles lowercase.
Why are small words lowercase?+
Articles (a, an, the), conjunctions (and, or, but), and short prepositions (in, on, at, to, of, with) are excluded by convention.
First and last words?+
Always capitalized regardless of position. 'The Of A Book' — even short words are capitalized first/last.
Words after a colon?+
Capitalized too. 'A Study: Methods and Results'.
What about hyphenated words?+
Usually both parts capitalized: 'Self-Esteem'. Some styles only capitalize the first: 'Self-esteem'.
