FAQ

How is ITF-14 different from EAN-13?+

ITF-14 is 14 digits and encodes the carton-level packaging GTIN. EAN-13 is for individual items.

What is the indicator digit?+

The first digit of ITF-14 (0โ€“8). 0 means variable measure; 1โ€“8 are packaging tiers (e.g., 12-pack = 1). Companies define their own rules.

Where do I print it?+

On both sides of the outer carton, 3โ€“12 cm wide, depending on box size.

Why thick bars?+

Designed to scan from a distance in warehouses (low light, moving trucks). Wider bars are more forgiving.

Do I need a Bearer Bar?+

The standard recommends a black border around the barcode. This tool generates the bars; add the border at print time.

Relation to GTIN-14?+

ITF-14 is the visual encoding of GTIN-14 (global trade item number). Use your assigned GTIN-14 directly.
